Seafood worthy of trying
Seafood worthy of trying

The Sardine Room in Plymouth, MI delivers the feel of an upscale trendy pub and the warmth of a comfortable neighborhood place with a southern feel. It promises good seafood and cocktails from the first reception and delivers on the first bite. This place gave me a big city feel without the honking horns and derelicts - Dan.

It has a whimsical, artistic wall that adds to the friendly atmosphere and the conversation! Who thought of putting a clown on a fish backwards? And are they underwater? The fox?? WTF? -Dan.

The drinks are creative and tasty. The short red drink is called a Mexican Firing Squad. All without the Cartel - Dan. It contains Cabresto tequila, lime, grenadine, and angostura bitters. It has a dark red color and looks very sweet. Like my bum! - Dan. However it is not sweet. I do not like drinks that are too sweet. It has a nice tequila feel, citrusy, and a nice bitter bite. It was strong enough to relaxe you after one. The taller pink drink was the Blackberry Collin’s. Which is made with Empress gin, lemon, and blackberry syrup. Served with a few fresh blackberries. This drink was refreshing like a warm citrusy blackberry summer day. Not too bitter, not sweet, not tart but a perfect blend. I could drink this on the beach in Florida with my dress socks and sandals! It’s that fancy and refreshing! - Dan.

The Snacks, as they called them all sounded amazing. We decided on the Crab Claws, Calamari, Scallops, and the Shishito Peppers. The prefect blend of starters!!

Crab Claws. We should have pulled them out to show the claw, so they don’t look like little woody’s.

The crab claws were served with a dijonnaise dipping sauce. They were as fresh as Michigan can get in the winter. Not fishy, tastefully tender, and perfectly delicate. Just like you would expect.

Calamari with a little something extra!
Calamari with a little something extra!

This Calamari dish held a little something extra. It was lightly fried, laying on a bed of gochujang kewpie, cusabi sauce with green onion and sesame topping. The sauce was a nice sweet tomatoish warm flavorful sauce that begs for you to drag the calamari morsel through, on the way of picking up a piece of green onion. The sauce added warmth and flavor that would be missed if it were not there. My only complaint with this dish was that I wish there were more. I would definitely order this dish again! The sauce was one of a kind like the Mona Lisa on a plate, only better looking! - Dan.

A Scallop to die for…
A Scallop to die for…

Now let’s talk about the scallop. This was a pan seared scallop laying on top of a crispy house cured pork belly, topped with bbq sauce, additionally topped with hollandaise, pickled onion, and chives. This dish was a perfect medley of a lot of flavors. Who would put so many flavors with a delicate scallop and somehow make it a blend of harmonious deliciousness that would make you order this dish again! Somehow the scallop still stood out with five layers of unique flavors and made you hum and want more. I would not die for Margo Robbie, but I might die for this…- Dan.

Shishito Peppers, who knew these would be a favorite!!
Shishito Peppers, who knew these would be a favorite!!

Who wants a bowl of fire roasted Shishito Peppers seasoned with lemon, sea salt, served with a house made chile sauce? Me! And eveytime! These little peppers are the perfect soft, crisp, mildly warm, healthy bites that you would go back and eat another and another. I am so glad we did not pass ordering these! They were on the happy hour menu. Worth adding. Another that I will definately order everytime. Shockingly good for someone who doesn’t really like peppers! Woke my taste buds up out of a dead sleep - Dan.

Julie ordered the Crab Cake snack and the Caesar Salad (without anchovies). The crab cake was a decent version of crab cakes. It was crispy on the outside, soft crab with light breading joined with the right amount of spices. It was served with a Dijon Creme sauce and topped with fresh green onion. The Caesar salad was crisp, had homemade croutons, and fresh shavings of parmasean cheese. A nice version of a Caesar.

Seafood Mix Grill
Seafood Mix Grill

Pam ordered the Seafood Mix Grill. This dish contained wild coastal shrimp in a garlic butter, pan-seared scallops, east coast lump crab cakes, wild rice pilaf, and sautéed spinach. This dish delivered on every item. The shrimp was the first bite and held a nice garlic, butter flavor in a tender shrimp. The crab cake was as good as previously mentioned. The scallops had a nice sear and remained soft and tender, melt in your mouth texture. The wild rice was surprisingly moist and tasty with a hint of beef or mushroom. (Wild rice can sometime feel dry- this was not dry). The sautéed spinach was actually really good. No bitterness in this version. It was wilted, flavorful and worth eating the whole serving. This dish overall was an order again! As much as I absolutely loved this dish, I have to say I had a taste of Dan’s dish, and now can’t wait to return to order that. (Up next)

Wild Coastal Shrimp & Grits
Wild Coastal Shrimp & Grits

And now for the most flavorful dish of the night, Dan ordered the Wild Coastal Shrimp and Grits. This dish contained several wild coastal shrimp with Dearborn andouille sausage and Fresno chilies all on top of white cheddar grits. It also had red and yellow tomato’s for an extra pop. The sauce was sweet, tomatoey, bitty in all the right ways, and the perfect marriage of flavors between the creamy, cheesy, grits, and the spicinesses of the sausage, to all hold up and help promote the shrimp. What? This dish had a lot going on. This is definitely an order again and something that just might make me come here specifically for dinner. This dish was hot and spicy and danced on your tongue like Shakira in a sultry video - Dan.
